The most inspirational magician in the world!

Our first MMF 20 International Guest is….

“One of my teachers told me I shouldn’t use my body because my body ‘isn’t any good,'” says the Canadian magician, who was born without hands or feet, Mahdi Gilbert. “[They said] that I should use my mind because my mind is still good.”

Mahdi didn’t have dreams growing up because the people around him would convince him out of them.

But then, at 17, he found something to be passionate about: sleight of hand.

Despite discovering that most of the literature about his newfound passion was written by two-handed magicians for other two-handed magicians, Gilbert would make it work for him and practice through the night.

“It was just working and failing every night,” the Toronto native says.

But, he thought, if he gave up on this thing — something that he really wanted and really loved — he would just continue to give up on anything challenging in his life.

That was 12 years ago. Now he shares stages with the likes of David Blaine, Penn and Teller and other legends of the magic world.

“I went from thinking that nobody would want to see what I was doing to travelling around the world and hundreds of millions of people seeing my magic.”

  • In 2015 he first performed at Hollywood’s Magic Castle and is now one of the only magicians in the world to hold an open invitation to perform whenever he would like.
  • In 2016 he was the first foreign magician to perform on South Korean national television (SBS) with an entire program devoted to his magic and motivational speaking.
  • In 2017, after fooling Penn & Teller, he performed on television specials in Portugal, Germany, Britain and on the Chinese hit show ‘The Amazing Magicians’, watched by 650 million people.
  • In 2018 Don Fritz, producer of the Broadway hits, ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ directed Mahdi in ‘Ocean of Dreams’ at the Shanghai Life Magic Festival.
  • In 2019 Mahdi appeared on Canadian national television through The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. They profiled the story of his life on CBC Arts: Exhibitionists.
  • In 2020 he makes his Australian debut at The Melbourne Magic Festival.
