Mr Onion (Mat Unwin) and Magical Lee (Lee Cohen) are the brains behind and in front of the Massive Little Magic Show. This entertaining family show has all the right ingredients to entertain the audience: cute animals, magic tricks and lots of audience participation.

In a nice twist on traditional magic conventions the female of the pair, Magical Lee, appears to be the one calling the shots with Mr Onion getting in flap as he tries to sort out the various dilemmas they encounter throughout the show.

There’s a lovely chemistry between the Mr Onion and Magical Lee, a warmth they share with each other and with the audience. They also prove to be very adept at plucking the right audience members to share the limelight on stage and using them well, getting them to enjoy the experience and never using them for cheap laughs.

The show features lots of magic, nothing out of the ordinary, but certainly well executed tricks. But the Massive Little Magic Show relies on more than magic to impress the audience; they play on the idea that their magic isn’t strong enough and call on the audience to help bring it all together. While this is fun for a little while, the very last trick was just a little too drawn out to maintain the excitement. That said, the crowd loved it and all the kids in the audience were desperate to take part. A particularly touching moment occurred in the final segment when a keen young boy in the front row yelled out “Pick me Mr Onion.”

The underage critics had the following views:

Scarlett (8): It was really funny, the magic tricks were good. There was lots of comedy and running around, I’d like more tricks.

Violet (8): Mr Onion did lots of silly running. The guinea pig and bunny trick was the best one.

Iris (6): When the guinea pig didn’t turn into the rabbit – that was the best bit.

Jasper (6): I got to go up on stage and help with the magic.
