REVIEW BY CAITLIN CROWLEY – ArtsHub
Your kids might notice that Luigi Zucchini bears an uncanny resemblance to Magic Tony from Channel Nine television show Kids WB. Both of them are characters performed by skilled magic practitioner Anthony De Masi. Luigi is a goofy Italian who weaves plenty of corny quips through his one hour magic show featuring in the Melbourne Magic Festival at Northcote Town Hall.
De Masi works tricks aplenty into his set featuring everything from card tricks to yes, pulling a rabbit out of a hat, although you’ll never see a cuter rabbit than De Masi’s magic-wand wielding bunny. Some of his more dazzling stunts include turning a guinea pig into a rabbit, pouring a bottle of milk into a newspaper and producing a dove from a fire. Who knows how he does it? And if that’s not enough for you he can also juggle, ride a unicycle and fold a bird.
It was a full house the day we attended and my, what a room to have to work. The mostly primary-school-aged audience were eager. Eager to yell out, eager to participate and eager to see just how the tricks worked. This included edging so far forward that they were almost on the stage so they could try and peek at how the tricks were performed and at one point even throwing something at Luigi himself. But De Masi is one of those very rare entertainers who not only pulled together an entertaining and professional show but actually managed to harness the energy in that room and make it work to his advantage.
On top of all this De Masi is a very, very funny man. While Luigi might be a crazy character his jokes were right on the money. In fact his show got more laughs than some of the kids’ comedy shows I’ve seen. De Masi also runs magic workshops, sharing his skills with fascinated youngsters. This show is fantastic for kids 12 and under and even better for their parents. Packed with tricks, jokes and stunts this show is solid entertainment from the get-go.
I loved it but the best critics are the intended audience. Here’s the word from my companions:
Indigo (11): He had lots of really good tricks. Was that dove real?
Violet (8): I really, really loved this show. Straight after I went into his Magic Workshop but I can’t tell you how he did the tricks. It’s a secret.
Jasper (6): That bunny kept picking up the wand and chucking it on the ground. Bunnies don’t like eating wands – they taste yuk.
