One half of the popular show Make Your Parents Disappear, Alex the Magician is bringing his solo magical antics to the festival in 2017. Be there to help one of Melbourne’s most mind-bending magicians create some amazing feats of magic just for you.
You may recognise Alex from his 2D appearances on TV shows such as Stand and Deliver, Totally Wild, the Today Show and Morning Show. Alex was a grand finalist on Australia’s Got Talent last year (as part of Gentlemen of Deceit), and he is also a regular guest on Kids’ WB on Channel GO. Alex’s sell-out live shows Make Your Parents Disappear and Gentlemen of Deceit have become regular fixtures at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and other festivals around Australia. In 2016 Alex took his show Gentlemen of Deceit: Three Times the Magic to the Sydney Opera House and Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne, and the group also found themselves performing in Los Angeles, Taipei and cities across Australia.
ALEX DE LA RAMBELJE is a magician and actor whose work focuses on blending magic with theatre. Alex graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Performing Arts (Hons), where he conducted his Honours study into how magic can function within a theatrical context. He directed a magic/theatre production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest (2008) to examine how magic stagecraft could be integrated into narrative to propel the inherent drama.
Alex has 10 years acting experience, having worked as an actor, director, writer and magic consultant in over 30 productions for various companies. He has devised and directed magic sequences for over 15 productions by independent theatre companies, schools, tertiary colleges and student groups, including Button (La Mama), Savage in Limbo (VCA), Violent Delights (Tapped Into Productions), The Cherry Orchard (Monash Academy of Performing Arts and Winterfall), Cinderella (Beaumaris Theatre Company), Sisters (Monash Shakespeare Society), and Illusination (Grey Matters Productions).
As a producer and performer Alex has co-devised the hugely successful children’s show Make Your Parents Disappear, as well as 6 comedy/magic shows with his group Gentlemen of Deceit. Gentlemen of Deceit have performed to sold-out houses at festivals around Australia, as well as in Asia and the USA. Alex’s TV performances include Stand and Deliver on ABC3, Kids’ WB (Channel GO) and Australia’s Got Talent (Channel Nine), where he was a grand finalist in 2016 with Gentlemen of Deceit. Earlier this year Gentlemen of Deceit were amongst a handful of acts to be invited to perform on German television in a competition to find the best performance acts in the world.
Alex is recognised as one of Melbourne’s top magicians by his peers, having been awarded first prize in the Australian Society of Magicians Competition in 2008, 2013 and 2015 and the Most Entertaining Act award in 2011 and 2012.
